The thick upper part of the [[needle]] is known as the shank, it can be completely round or have a flat side.  The shank is inserted into the needle clamp to secure the needle in place.

Shank 1.

The thick upper part of the needle is known as the shank, it can be completely round or have a flat side. The shank is inserted into the needle clamp to secure the needle in place.


Shank 2.

Part of the Presser Foot that attaches to the presser bar. Presser feet are commonly referred to as High or Low Shank. Clip-on presser feet soles attach to the Shank.
