Needle Bar - A round, square or rectangular bar in the Head, normally positioned vertically and behind the Face Plate. The lower end of the needle bar carries the needle. In the majority of machines the needle bar goes up and down in a vertical direction, or tilted slightly away from the operator on Slant-O-matic machines. On Needle Feed machines the needlebar oscillates in a 'figure of 8' motion, using the back and forth motion to feed the material across the stitch plate.
