The Characteristics of a Sewing Machine Needle
Sewing machine needles vary in size (length and diameter), in shape (curved or straight), positioning of the eye, type of shank and tip, depending on the machine's requirements and the item to be sewed. Whatever the size and shape, needles share the characteristics shown.

The needle takes the thread through the fabric and as the needle comes back up again, a loop is formed into which the Hook, Shuttle or Chainstitch Looper enters, to create a stitch. The Humble Needle
