The NeedleBar

Ward Brothers

Melbourne, Victoria

(information thanks to Ursel Niggemann & Rosemary Howells - Ismacs)

Established in 1888 by brothers G & S Ward in Errol Street, North Melbourne. Cabinets and ironwork made in Australia. Imported machines from Germany, including Biesolt & Locke and Clemens Muller. Sewing machines were sold under several names, including Ward, ANA (All Native Australian) and the Australian Sewing Machine Company (popular after Federation in 1901).

Customers were encouraged to trade in their old sewing machines for patriotic "Australian" machines; logos and slogans reflected their quality and all aspects of Australian life, such as a kangaroo or map of Australia with the Ward Brothers' picture.

ANA was a trademark registered by Biesolt & Locke from Meissen, Germany, c1910. For at least part of Ward's history it seems that they may have imported Biesolt & Locke machines exclusively.
