28-1 (early)

Treadle or hand crank. Also known as a VS3 (Vibrating Shuttle 3). A size machine with a bed length of 12 inches long (see Singer 27 for larger sized machines beds). Features include a low bobbin winder, kidney shaped rear inspection plate, manual tension release without a shuttle eject button. Shuttle requires a notch towards the tip to seat correctly in the shuttle carrier and function properly. Subsequent models have a pear shaped rear inspection plate. The later 28-1 differs from the 28-3 in slight changes to the arm and bed castings, and small mechanical changes. See Identifying Singer VS Machines for further information, comparisons and Kilbowie variations. (Most 128 models have auto tension release and shuttle eject button. Occasionally varieties of 28 machines turn up that have been upgraded with a new shuttle carrier and shuttle eject button, making them appear to be a 128, but they are still a 28.)
