001d. Improved Family

# 8173162, 1887, courtesy of Christoph Schmidt. This fiddlebased machine, known as the 15-1 or I.F., was the forerunner of the Singer 15. The I.F. was produced from approximately 1879 to 1895. It has an oscillating shuttle movement and the bobbin (smaller than a Singer 15's) is mounted in a flip-open case. A modern industrial bobbin #2073 will fit this machine. For a full breakdown of domestic Singer 15 classifications, visit HERE.

Singer continued to make the model 15 (with square bed) with a chainstitch option. They had to be special ordered and were used mainly for manufacturing hosiery, dye work, etc. They could be ordered with single or double chainstitch.

To remove the Bobbin.
